Storm Rising by Rachael Richey

Storm Rising is the first in the Nighthawk series (the second, Rhythm of Deceit, was published at the end of July). NightHawk is the name of the band fronted by Gideon Hawk. At the beginning of the story, he has just unexpectedly and dramatically walked out on his band and come home to England. At the same time, we meet Abigail who has returned home for her mother’s funeral, having never seen her parents for ten years. She had sworn never to talk to her mother again and it is clear that her mother had been a very nasty, bullying woman. Through chapters told from both characters’ points of view and moving between 1995 and 2005, we learn about what happened to drive them apart and join them as they begin to rekindle their love and uncover a shocking secret. I felt the author was really good at revealing the story a bit at a time, leaving you hanging at the end of chapters. The two main characters were really likeable too. Abi was just your typical teenager, posters on the wall, working hard at school when she met and fell in love with the handsome Gideon. She has grown into a strong, though troubled young woman, a talented artist living in Sennen in Cornwall. (Having been there, I know it must be an inspiring place for an artist as it’s so beautiful.) Gideon wasn’t your typical wild rockstar as he was so caring and loyal, although it was funny when he met some young fans and pretended to be all moody! Special mention must go the character of Abi’s friend Judy. She was such a supportive and dependable friend to Abi when they were teenagers and despite not having heard from her for a while, is there for her again unquestioningly when Abi needs her. Good characters and a well plotted storyline made for an enjoyable read. My thanks to the author, Rachael Richey. for giving me a copy in exchange for this honest review.

Storm Rising was published by The Wild Rose Press on 13 February 2015 and you can buy a copy here: Storm Rising

What the book is about:

Frontman of the grunge rock band NightHawk, Gideon Hawk has had enough of the rock star life. He is jaded, disillusioned, and haunted by the memory of an unresolved heartbreak. On a whim, he leaves the band in New York and heads to England in search of answers. After attending the funeral of her estranged mother, Abigail Thomson makes a shocking discovery in her parents’ attic. The still-raw memories that surface, along with even more startling discoveries, force Abi to face a devastating truth that leads to a series of life-changing events. She and Gideon must race against time to reclaim the life stolen from them a decade before.

I don’t think I’d have chosen this if I hadn’t read your post. Thanks for pointing it out.
