My Girl by Jack Jordan

When I read Jack Jordan’s debut novel, Anything for Her, last year I was very impressed. In my review I said “This young writer could easily be one of the top thriller writers of the future. I’m sure we will be hearing the name Jack Jordan a lot in the years to come.” (You can read my review here: Anything for Her) In this second book, he has shown that he can keep up the standard of chilling, totally gripping writing. It is quite a short novel, which I raced through, but it  is packed full of action, shocks and twists.

I cannot imagine what it must be like to have been in Paige Dawson’s position. Ten years ago her only daughter was abducted and all that was ever found of her was an arm in a river. Tests showed she was still alive when she had been dismembered. More recently her husband Ryan, struggling to cope, has taken his own life with Paige discovering the body. Everyday she wakes from her nightmare, only to realise it is true and not a dream after all – a living nightmare. Perhaps not surprisingly, she has turned to drink and prescription pills to try to block out the horror that is her life. Her brother and father are so worried about her and continually offer to help, offers which she rejects. And now, strange things are happening in her house. She has found a gun and a second mobile hidden in her husband’s office, things are mysteriously disappearing, she is sure someone has been in her house.

This was such a chilling read. Jack Jordan has created a real sense of menace and Paige makes such poor choices putting herself in more danger. Right from the first chapter revealing the awful situation Paige is in, the pace does not let up making this a book I did not want to put down. Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse for poor Paige, it did, and in the most unexpected way! It was one of those moments in a book where you just think ‘wow!’. The second part of the book reveals what has really been going on and I had not suspected what was coming at all. It is incredibly tense, dark and compelling. I would have liked to find out a bit more about what was going on with Ryan as I felt that part of the storyline was left unresolved. But then, I’m not sure realistically how Paige could have found out.

I was really gripped by this book and just had to keep reading. If anything, I would have liked it to be a bit longer, particularly the second half which covered a long time period in quite a compact way. That said though, this is an excellent read and one for any fast paced thriller fans to put on their reading lists. More please Mr Jordan!

My thanks to the author inviting me to read his book and give my honest review. My Girl will be published as an ebook on July 4th and is currently only 99p to pre-order: My Girl

From the back of the book

Paige Dawson: the mother of a murdered child and wife to a dead man.

She has nothing left to live for… until she finds her husband’s handgun hidden in their house.

Why did Ryan need a gun? What did he know about their daughter’s death?

Desperate for the truth, Paige begins to unearth her husband’s secrets.

But she has no idea who she is up against, or that her life isn’t hers to gamble – she belongs to me.

From the bestselling author of Anything for Her, Jack Jordan’s My Girl is the new chilling thriller that you won’t want to miss.
