And finally I can reveal the two books I’ve read this year which are my absolute favourites and I have been recommending to people ever since I read them.
First of all, and this will come as no surprise to anyone I’m sure, is Patrick Gale’s wonderful Take Nothing With You. I am a huge fan of this author’s work and was beside myself with excitement when I was sent a proof copy. It is the story of young Eustace and his cello and is a coming of age tale. But it’s also the story of older Eustace looking back at his life and contemplating the possibility of loving again. As you might expect with Patrick Gale, it is beautifully written and so compelling. You can read my rather gushing review here: Take Nothing With You
Next is a more recent read and one which is only available as an e-book in the UK at the moment although the paperback is due for release in February. It is the beautiful The Book of Love by Fionnuala Kearney. The book referred to in the title is a book Dom and Erin were given on their wedding day, a book they use to express their feelings if they are finding it hard to talk to each other. It is yet another book which had me reaching for the hankies and there are some incredibly sad parts to the book. But it’s also such an uplifting read which I loved (mightily!) and the last line was just so perfect. One not to miss. Read my review here: The Book of Love
So there we have it. I have given you twenty of my favourite reads over the past couple of weeks. If you have missed any of my choices, put #TopReads2018 in the search box and you should find all the posts. It was hard to narrow it down to just twenty as I have read so many fantastic books this year. Perhaps some of my choices were among your favourites too or perhaps they have given you some ideas of books to add to your own reading list. I wonder what wonderful adventures authors will take me on next year?
