Mr Portobello Book Blog takes over today with his review of The Counterfeit Candidate by Brian Klein. I think you’ll agree, it’s a book he rather enjoyed!
What a wonderful debut novel by Brian Klein: The Counterfeit Candidate. I have just finished reading this novel and I’m so excited by the climax to the book! I wish I could share the excitement and detail of the final few chapters but of course that would spoil the plot for you! What I can say is Klein’s debut novel is brilliantly judged, wonderfully creative and incredible in all senses of the word.
The story links back to the end of the Second World War and the escape of Hitler, Braun and Bormann to South America. It intertwines into modern American politics and a wonderful bank robbery plot with the descriptions of characters and places fresh and engaging. The characters instantly come to life with the three bank robbers seeming to be unlikely heroes and the focus for the pages ahead.
As the story develops further, it becomes clear the scope and focus for this book is much wider and much more sinister. I was on the edge of my seat (and bed 🙂) all the way through, as the story develops and complexities grow with the increasing feeling of despair in the race against time for the heroes of the story, Chief Inspector Nicholas Varges and his long-time friend Lieutenant Troy Hembury.
This is one of my favourite books this year and I very much look forward to reading future works by Brian Klein. A terrific story with a fresh, exciting, fast paced plot. Read it and I am sure you will be enthralled.
