Today’s #AuthorInTheFestiveSpotlight is Helen Buckley whose Spotlight series of novels published by ChocLit are all inspired by popular reality tv shows. Her latest is Strictly Christmas Spirit and you can all guess which show inspired that one! I’ll be reviewing the book next week but in the meantime, let’s find out about Helen and her Christmas favourites.
Welcome Helen. First of all, would you tell my blog readers a little about yourself?
Hello! I’m Helen Buckley. I love writing romance, I’m a chocolate addict, an action movie fan, and an old-fashioned romantic! My Spotlight Series is a collection of standalone stories about fame and love.
In a nutshell, what is your Christmas book about?
Strictly Christmas Spirit is about a Hollywood bad boy sent to do community service at a homeless shelter. Blake instantly clashes with centre manager Emily, a former dancer on TV show Strictly Dancing with Celebs. He hates Christmas and hates volunteering at the centre, and can’t wait for it to end. But as the days pass, he begins to make a connection with the people he meets there, even Emily.
Could their time together, coupled with a dash of Christmas spirit, lead to a miracle change of heart for them both?
How did you come up with the title for your book?
A lot of discussion with my publishers! We wanted it to tie in with the rest of the series, and with the show that inspired it. So Strictly Christmas Spirit seemed like the right fit.
Do you still keep any Christmas traditions from your childhood?
I love to watch the Muppet Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve. It’s my favourite Christmas film!
How do you plan to celebrate Christmas this year?
I’ll spend it with my husband and two little boys. My eldest son is nearly three so this year I think he’ll understand a bit more of what Christmas means. We’ll see family on the day and afterwards too.
Do you have a favourite Christmas song?
I really like Shakin’ Stevens Merry Christmas Everyone, and I always cry when I hear Cliff Richard’s Mistletoe and Wine.
And a favourite Christmas book?
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I love the heartfelt story of redemption and the moral of the story that it’s never too late to change your ways. I tried to incorporate some of those themes in my own book Strictly Christmas Spirit, though of course I will never be half as good a writer as the great Dickens!
What Christmas book are you looking forward to reading this year?
Choc Lit has some great releases out for Christmas, I want to read all of them! If only I had time!
How can people follow you or connect with you on social media?

And finally, what’s the best Christmas present you ever received?
Such a hard question to answer! I can’t say, I couldn’t choose just one
Thanks so much for sharing your Christmas favourites with us Helen.
