#MusicMonday – six books I’ve read which have a musical connection

Last week, I did a #MusicMonday post on six songs inspired by books and this week I’m featuring six books in which music plays an important role. This week I’ve chose six books which I’ve already read. Next week, I’ll be sharing six books featuring music which I’d like to read.

The Commitments by Roddy Doyle

Well known as a film too of course, The Commitments is about a soul band from Barrytown managed by Jimmy Rabbitte, trying to hit the big time. It’s great fun!

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I suppose Daisy Jones and the Six would be the more obvious Taylor Jenkins Reid book to include here but I’m in a minority in that I wasn’t very keen on that one. However, I really liked Malibu Rising which is the story of the Riva family, in particular the oldest daughter Nina. Nina and her siblings are the children of faded rock star Mick Riva which is where the music connection come in. You can read my review here: Malibu Rising

The Piano Man Project by Kat French

This Book has now been renamed My Perfect Stranger but was The Piano Man Project when I read it back in 2015. I’m sure you can guess what the music connection is in this one. Hal is a piano playing ex-chef and the attraction between him and his next door neighbour Honey is electric. I loved this one, a great rom-com! Read my review here: The Piano Man Project

This Could be Everything by Eva Rice

This Could Be Everything is a very recent release and is set in the early 1990s. Music is really important to the main character, February, especially when it comes to the chart show on the radio. Michael Hutchence from INXS has quite an important cameo role. There’s a great playlist to go along with the book too. Read my review here: This Could Be Everything

The Idea of You by Robinne Lee

The Idea of You by Robinne Lee is a book you may have seen all over social media a couple of years ago. In it, the main character Solene has a passionate affair in many glitzy locations with a much younger singer from a boyband who just is Harry Styles, let’s be honest! It was a fun and very addictive read, very entertaining. My review is here: The Idea of You

Notting Hill in the Snow Jules Wake

My final choice is a Christmas read from Jules Wake who is one of my favourite romantic fiction novels. This novel sees a viola player called Viola helping to organise a nativity play in Notting Hill and just maybe falling in love at the same time. You can read that review here: Notting Hill in the Snow

Have you read any of these books? Are there any other books you’ve read
where music features heavily? Do let me know in the comments.

      1. There’s one of the Six Stories by Matt Wesolowski that’s about a rock star – think it’s Demon. And there is Louise Beech’s Call Me Star Girl set in a radio station (tenuous I know 😂)

    1. Just looked that up – sound really good. The problem with doing a post like this is I’m getting loads of suggestions for other books that all sound terrific!

  3. My friend Dan Greenberger (who won awards for his commercial writing) wrote a novel called The Boys Next Door, about a young American man in Berlin in the early 60s, who takes an apartment next door to the Beatles – before Ringo and before they were famous. I think you’d like it. It is only available on Amazon, though.
